Scarlet Pistol Logo

Women and Guns is proud to announce the revival of the Scarlet Pistols Shooting Group! Beginning July 3, 2017, and every Monday there after, any woman who previously attended any of our shooting classes is welcome and encouraged to attend.  Our goal is to encourage women to practice the skills they learned in class while enjoying an afternoon of fun with other women.

We will meet at the New Lakewood Shooting Range,  2:00pm is our target start time, but late arrivals are fine, (we realize traffic can be a factor). The range is open until 9:00pm.  The range fee for ladies is $12.50 per lane, $10 for an additional shooter sharing the same lane.  Friends and family are welcome to attend, but must be 18 years or older, and have some basic firearms safety training to join our group.

Women and Guns will provide tips to improve your shooting techniques.  Bring your own guns and ammunition, or plan to rent a gun at the range and purchase ammunition and targets.  If it is your first time to the range, there will be a short safety video and the usual paperwork to complete before you start shooting.  Depending on the turn out, we may even have a “just for fun” shooting competition!

If you have not had a chance to experience the new Lakewood Shooting Range and Welchers New Gun Shop, plan to visit them soon.  You won’t be disappointed!

See you at the range!  Janice

Review of Welcher’s Gun Shop, Lakewood Shooting Range, June 7, 2017.

WOW!!  Amazing practice session at Welchers Gunshop and new Lakewood Shooting Range. The place is first class all the way to the beautiful laminate flooring throughout. The range staff are professional, friendly and very helpful. RSO on the floor at all times, plus security cameras. The air quality in the range is outstanding. 16 shooting stalls are now open, all with electronic target carriers. And LOTS OF SPACE behind the shooting benches, no crowding or bumping into people. A+ in every category. I will be a regular customer. The retail store is spacious and well stocked, prices are very competitive.
Check it out, Bridgeport exit off of I-5, right next door to the Ford dealership. Lots of parking.

It seems that despite the overwhelming number of women buying firearms in today’s culture, we (women) still get treated like we don’t have a clue about guns or shooting.  This is both surprising and disappointing.

Women are where the money is.  Guys, pay attention.

The woman at the gun counter may have just as much knowledge, experience and money as you do.  Maybe more.

The woman at the range may shoot better than you do.  And she may even own more guns and know more about them than you do.  Why would you assume the opposite?

The woman sitting next to you in training class wants to exercise her 2nd amendment rights and have the ability to protect herself and her family.  Is this any different than you?

A pretty face is much more than just a pretty face.  Stop judging people by their gender.  At the gun store, gun range or anywhere else for that matter.

Gig Harbor Sportsman Club

It is not my usual practice to spread negative information about any person, club or organization.  But, today I make an exception.  Since relocating to the Port Orchard area, my husband and I have been scouting prospective shooting facilities in the area.  My husband, (Vietnam Vet), enjoys long range rifle shooting, and it requires an outdoor facility.  In my usual way, I first went to Google to find ranges in the area.  Gig Harbor Sportsman Club is the closest to our location.  Shooting at an outdoor range can be very enjoyable, in good weather.  As I currently teach women’s classes, I thought there might also be a chance to offer some classes at their facility as well.  Many women from the area have asked if I offer anything on “this side of the bridge”, (Tacoma Narrows).  The answer is always the same, “No, I don’t access to a range.”

Living in the outskirts of Port Orchard is beautiful and peaceful.  And, there is no cell phone reception.  So most of my communication with the outside world is through email.

I contacted the Gig Harbor Sportsman Club, by email, and requested information about their membership and facility.  I explained that my husband and I enjoyed shooting as a sport, and that my husband was a Vietnam Vet.  Often clubs will honor the vets with discounts.  I was honest and up front about my interest to offer women’s classes.  I had been warned in advance by a couple of friends that this club was run by a group of “Good ole boys”.  Nothing new, really, in the gun community.

The following is the first response to my request, and I quote:
“The Gig Harbor Sportsman’s Club has very stringent protocol and qualifications as to who is able to use the facility for teaching firearms related classes.”  No other rhetoric.  Nothing was mentioned about us joining the club.  I responded by saying I was glad they are so safety conscious, and asked if I might be told what those protocols and qualifications were.

The following is the 2nd response to my request, and I quote:

“I might be easiest to discuss things in person with myself and our vice president so that we can answer any questions about the facility and teaching requirements.  Feel free to give me a call at 253-851-4233 to set up  time.  I use the answering machine to screen calls, so if I do not pick up right away, just leave message  and I will get back to you ASAP.”
I waited for some time before responding.  Keep in mind I have no phone service. (Just as well.)  And after some thought replied asking for an appointment to come and see the facility and discuss teaching requirements.
The following is the the 3rd response to my request for an appointment, and I quote:
“Unfortunately the Club is restricting any training to certified member instructors only.  Their classes must meet a list of criteria imposed by both the board and city.  So at this time we will not be able to meet your needs for use of our facility.”
Being the analytical person that I am, I researched their website, reviewed their bylaws, and their last meeting minutes.  The minutes included the request to allow an outside group to come in and teach basic firearms classes.  (not my group).
One last quote copied and pasted from their website:

Mission Statement  “To provide a facility and organization that safely, enjoyably, and economically allows our members, guests, and our community to participate in the shooting sports and fellowship of the Club.”

I guess a woman shooter and her husband who is a veteran of the Vietnam war does not deserve the same treatment as everyone else in the community.  This kind of attitude is exactly why I teach women only classes.

*This experience has prompted me to not only write this post, but create a new category titled “Not Women Friendly”.

G&A Perspectives: 25 Ways to Make Women Feel at Home On the Range

by Kyle Wintersteen   |  October 14th, 201412

Attention, ladies: We male shooters haven’t always been a welcoming bunch, but we want women to get involved in shooting and hunting and we have the stats to prove it. For instance, did you know that nearly two in five new shooters are women, and most were introduced to firearms as adults?

You see, we men take the responsibility of introducing you to firearms seriously. With a little care on our part, we know that if you try shooting, you’re probably going to like it and perhaps even develop a lifelong passion for the sport. Given these acknowledgements, here’s why females are joining the shooting ranks at a record pace, plus 25 savvy tips for helping women feel at home on the range.

Female Shooters On the Rise
The rise in female shooters among our ranks is largely a result of changing attitudes and perceptions. Shooting ranges and hunting cabins are generally no longer men’s refuges but places where women are also welcomed.

Participation by female shooters has in turn skyrocketed, fueled by their interest in hunting, personal defense and plain old fun. According to the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), nearly half of the participants in itsFirst Shots program for beginner shooters are female, 76 percent of whom said they were motivated by an interest in self-defense.

Thanks to programs such as First Shots as well as regular folks willing to introduce women to shooting, the female segment of the shooting community is expanding at a record pace. According to a report by the research firm Responsive Management titled “Analysis of Sport Shooting Participation in the U.S.,” 37 percent of new target shooters are female, whereas only 22 percent of established target shooters are female. That’s quite a jump, especially given the report’s finding that 20 percent of all target shooters began in the last five years. This new crop of shooters is also far younger, according to the NSSF, with an average age of 33 compared with established shooters’ average age of 43. Yet, says the NSSF, these aren’t necessarily folks who grew up in gun-owning households; 77 percent got started after their 18th birthday.

Hunting participation rates among women indicate a similar trend. According to a2009 report by the National Sporting Goods Association, the number of female hunters grew from 3,041,000 in 2008 to 3,204,000 in 2009, a 5 percent increase. Now, more than 16 percent of hunters overall are female.

Barriers to Entry
So, traditionally, why have fewer women participated in shooting, and what barriers may remain? A 1990 conference at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, “Breaking Down Barriers to Participation of Women in Angling and Hunting,” identified what I believe to be the key culprits, problems that linger to this day:

  • Poor images and stereotypes of typical gun owners, particularly as portrayed in anti-gun media stories.
  • Expensive startup costs. Many women don’t want to spend a few hundred bucks to try an activity they may not enjoy.
  • Traditionputs social pressure on women to avoid shooting and choose activities that are perceived as more feminine.

These, among other things, have without question prevented some women from joining the shooting sports. When a large portion of the media is shaming female hunters such as Melissa Bachman and Kendall Jones for legally hunting or painting gun owners, and even guns themselves, as evil, it doesn’t exactly encourage more female involvement in hunting or shooting. The high financial cost of shooting and the traditional societal pressures on women certainly don’t help either.

However, I believe there is another common factor that serves as an additional barrier to entry, and for that, I have a story.

Bad First Experiences
A friend of mine wasn’t even sure she wanted to become a hunter or shooter, but 30 years ago she did want to give it a try. “A few weeks after I turned 13, my dad was headed out the door to go pheasant hunting, so I asked to join him,” she recalled. “He said, ‘Well then, we have to see if you can shoot.’”

Her father escorted her to the backyard, handed her a lightweight, 12-gauge side-by-side with a high-brass shotshell in the chamber and — shamefully — told her, “Go ahead, shoot it.”

“The gun kicked the snot out of me, and my dad just laughed,” she said. “I went inside with tears in my eyes and never touched a gun again.”

I wonder: Had my friend been properly introduced to shooting, would she have developed a lifelong love of the sport? Does her father regret doing literally everything wrong, from handing his daughter a heavy-recoil firearm to providing minimal instruction to intimidating her with his attitude? Or, more likely given the era, did he intend all along to scare his daughter away from shooting?

Many men (and women) are highly accommodating of women interested in giving shooting a try, but all too many exhibit the same reckless machismo as my friend’s father. A YouTube search for “girl gun recoil” turns up countless examples of unsafe, unproductive acts of stupidity. Others have good intentions of introducing women to shooting but lack the knowledge to go about it properly.

Fortunately, all barriers to entry for female shooters, including that first introduction, can be overcome with a little care. Introduce women to shooting the right way: in a fun, safe environment that may just lead to a lifelong passion for firearms.
